Offered is a rare intact and functional 19th Century cast triple gimballed floating maritime 8 point gyroscope compass #14908 manufactured (and signed) by Adolf Lietz. Adolph Lietz was born in Leubeck, Germany in 1860. He immigrated to San Francisco in 1879 and worked in several scientific instrument shops before opening his own business. The firm incorporated in 1892 under the name “The A. Lietz Company”. This particular instrument is in excellent condition for its age. The face is clear and the gimballs move freely. The mahogany box is original – the lid has its originalt green felt and compass remains solidly seated in the base. The box is closed with a leather strap secured to the base. The leather has been recently replaced to keep the instrument secure. The base of the instrument is drilled on both sides to facilitate necessary fixation inside the ship. The box is 9″ x 9″ x 8″.
