Lithographic prints on heavyweight paper, 13″ x 16.5″ prints, The Disney Gallery opened above Pirates of the Caribbean in Disneyland in 1987 to display the art, designs, and models created in development of the Anaheim Park. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s the Gallery produced lithographic and photographic prints of concept paintings by Disney Imagineers.
This lithograph presents a “concept illustrations by Herbert Ryman for Disneyland’s New Orleans Square. Mr Ryman painted the scenes for WED Enterprises in 1964 and 1965 when this area of Disneyland was in development.
The set was issued in a limited edition of 500, and this print is numbered “138/500” in pencil. Printed below the image is a descriptive title of the area depicted, the artist’s name, and “© The Walt Disney Company.” Each print is embossed “Disney Gallery Images” in the image area at lower right.
In 1938 Walt Disney met Herb Ryman at a gallery exhibit of his work and invited him to join the studio. Mr. Ryman served as an art director on Fantasia (1940), Dumbo (1941), Saludos Amigos (1943), and The Three Caballeros (1945). in 1953 he moved to WED Enterprises where, until his retirement in 1971, he worked in development of Disneyland and Walt Disney World. He painted the iconic original concept for Disneyland shown by Roy Disney to potential investors and designed Sleeping Beauty Castle. In the later 1970s and 1980s Mr. Ryman created paintings and drawings for Walt Disney Imagineering during the development of EPCOT Center and Euro Disneyland. He passed away in 1989 and was named a Disney Legend the following year.
